“Pip pip old chap,” were the last
words my father spoke to
me, him
standing on the platform, me leaning from the
train. Moving off I tried to
wave, but fear of falling made me grab the window’s
edge.
It should have been my first day back at
school – a minor public one I must
confess – but the news had got there
first. “I’m afraid to say,” the fearful master
said, “your father is a
spy.” I was delighted by the
news. It was a storybook start, or
end, to the new school year. I was immediately
withdrawn, for it was
1956,
the year it all
began.
